Technical Explanation of VAIO Security

[Cause of the Security Problem]
Japanese models: "VAIO Manual CyberSupport for VAIO" version 3.0 and
Version 3.1
Oversea models: "VAIO Manual"
[NOTE] As some VAIO models with the above software are not affected by this security
weakness it is very important to check the [List of Affected
Models] carefully before taking any action.
[Possible Outcome Resulting from this Security Problem]
An unauthorized person with ill intent may [attack] the security weakness by hidden
programs in an Internet home page or Email message to invade the VAIO PC. This
would probably be achieved using the following methods:
An Internet Home page
An Email containing HTML computer code
An HTML file attached to an Email
If an affected VAIO PC is subjected to one of these
cyber attacks, it may lead to possible rewriting, destruction or copying of data
stored on the PC without the VAIO customer's authorization or knowledge. These
cyber attacks cannot be prevented by regular anti-virus software.
| However as far as we know (as of January 24, 2002)
there have been no reports from VAIO users of any such violations of VAIO security.

[Solution of the Problem]
The installation of the [VAIO Security Enhancement Program]
can protect VAIO from this cyber attack. As computer virus and security weakness
are a constant risk in the Internet environment, Sony strongly recommends VAIO
customers install anti-virus software, and check security information on VAIO
Homepage in order to continue being vigilant against computer virus and security
weakness.
(Examples of Security Measures)
Do not open or view HTML format Email and/or attached files sent by an unknown
person
Do not randomly access home pages of a questionable nature
Be cautious when opening a file received from a third person
Run a virus scan frequently with anti-virus software
Keep updated on the latest information via the "Information Section"
of the official VAIO home page [SUPPORT]
site.
